Voice over LTE (VoLTE) is still in the early stages of rollout in the Americas and Europe. VoLTE mobile calls vary from traditional 2G and 3G mobile calls because the LTE data network will transmit voice in the same way that it transmits data. Voice calls will be delivered through packets similar to emails, messaging apps, and other communications.
The most noticeable benefit of VoLTE is HD Audio which makes voices sound rich and more life-like over the phone. With VoLTE, callers will eventually be able to integrate video chat or calls straight from the phone without a separate app. VoLTE will also drive faster call setup times and will eventually better integrate with voice over Wi-Fi service for improved coverage.
Many variables need to be met in order to experience a true VoLTE call.
- Both callers need to be on a compatible VoLTE network in a VoLTE coverage area.
- Both phones need to be VoLTE compatible phones
- At least one major carrier also requires you to opt in to LTE for voice online under your account settings.
Poly Voyager Edge and Voyager Legend support HD Audio when wideband is enabled using the MyHeadset Updater tool for PC and Mac.
User can confirm that HD Voice (Wideband Audio) is toggled on using either the My Headset Updater tool or the Poly Hub™ app for iOS or Android from Poly.com
HD Audio (Wideband) is standard on Explorer 500, Marque 2 M165, M95, M90 and M70 headsets.
The wireless operators rollout is still early and work in progress, so solutions are in the works to address common challenges:
- Dropped calls if one person on the VoLTE call leaves LTE coverage or if the signal is too weak
- Only certain devices include 4G LTE radios and are equipped with software that allows VoLTE. (Check with directly with your carrier to see if your mobile phone is VoLTE compatible.)
- Interoperability between carriers is limited. Some of the major carriers are collaborating to address this issue. Contact your wireless provider for up to date news.
VOLTE COMPATIBLE HEADSETS
HD Voice has limited availability in select markets. Deployment ongoing. HD Voice Requirements: To experience HD Voice, both parties on the call must have an AT&T HD Voice-capable device with a SIM type of UICC-G and higher, be located in an AT&T HD Voice coverage area with a phone number based within an HD Voice coverage area, and have HD Voice set up on their AT&T account. The following features/services are currently incompatible with HD Voice service: prepaid service, Smart Limits, Ringback Tones, and OfficeDirect and OfficeReach (for business customers). HD Voice will be available at no additional cost. Demo provides example of actual HD Voice call. Results not guaranteed.
Advanced Calling 1.0 Requirements: HD Voice requires both parties to use a Verizon HD Voice-enabled phone on Verizon’s 4G LTE network. Video Calling requires HD Voice and a Video Calling-enabled phone. HD Voice and Video calls are billed like regular voice calls. Data usage also applies to Video Calls. The following features/services are incompatible with Advanced Calling 1.0: prepaid service, Caller Name ID, and Ringback Tones. Additional incompatible features apply for Business and Government customers.
