Managing Configuration Profiles with RealPresence Resource Manager

This article covers the process of Managing Configuration Profiles with RealPresence Resource Manager.  Managing configuration profiles is a multistep process that includes the following tasks: Prerequisites:
  • The "Provision Profiles" permission is required for a user to create or modify configuration profiles.
  • The "Endpoint Admin" permission is required for a user to deploy configuration profiles.

Managing Configuration Profiles

Configuration profiles allow you to define configuration attributes and software requirements, which will be sent to associated phones in accordance to the chosen deployment strategy. To ensure out-of-box usability, RealPresence Resource Manager comes with a large number of pre-defined ("Polycom Standard") configuration profiles which are read-only.  These pre-defined configuration profiles can be used directly, or can be copied and modified as new configuration profiles.

Creating configuration profiles

You can create new configuration profiles to customize phone configuration in your environment.  You can either create a new configuration profile or copy an existing/pre-defined configuration profile and make necessary changes. The "Provision Profiles" permission is required for a user to create or modify configuration profiles. Create a new configuration profile:
  1. Navigate to Endpoint > Phone Management > Configuration Profiles.
  2. Click the    (Add) button.
  3. In the General Information tab of the Add New Configuration Profile dialog, enter a Profile Name and Description for the new configuration profile.
  4. Click the Configuration Attributes tab.
  5. Do one of the following:
    • From the Software drop-down list, select a software package.
See Managing Phone Software with RealPresence Resource Manager for details on managing phone software.
    • Add configuration attributes in one of the following ways:
      • Standard Fields
      • Custom Fields
      • Import from File
      • Paste Configuration XML
  6. Click OK to save the changes.
Copy an existing/pre-defined configuration profile:
  1. Navigate to Endpoint > Phone Management > Configuration Profiles.
  2. Select a configuration profile from the list, and click the    (Copy) button.
  3. In the Copy Configuration Profile dialog, enter a new Profile Name and Description for the new configuration profile.
  4. Click the Configuration Attributes tab, and edit as needed.
  5. Click OK to save the changes.
It is best practice to avoid creating configuration profiles which define both configuration attributes as well as software requirements.  In doing so, we would lose some flexibility in how we can deploy the configuration profiles.

Deploying configuration profiles

A configuration profile is considered deployed (in action) once it has been associated with one of the pre-defined deployment strategies.  A deployment strategy represents the association between configuration profiles and the phones. The "Endpoint Admin" permission is required for a user to deploy configuration profiles. RealPresence Resource Manager offers the following pre-defined deployment strategies (ordered by priority from the lowest to highest):

Global

All phones are unconditionally associated with the global deployment strategy.  Associate configuration profiles here when the configuration profile contains common configuration which all phones (globally) require. To deploy a configuration profile for all phones:
  1. Navigate to Endpoint > Phone Management > Profiles Deployment.
  2. Select the Global tab.
  3. Click the    (Edit) button.
  4. In the Edit Configuration Profile Association for Global dialog, select a configuration profile from the Configuration Profile Association drop-down list.
  5. Click Add.
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 to add more configuration profiles.
  7. Adjust the priority of the configuration profiles by clicking the  (priority) buttons, which will appear as you hover over the configuration profiles added in the list.
  8. Do one of the following:
    • Click Save and Apply to apply the updates to the associated phones now.  This operation may reboot online phones within this group.
    • Click Save to wait for the updates to take effect during the next polling period.

Endpoint Groups

Administratively managed groups of endpoints.  Associate configuration profiles here when the configuration profile contains common configuration which phones within these groups require. There are no pre-defined endpoint groups included in RealPresence Resource Manager.  See  Managing Endpoint Groups with RealPresence Resource Manager  for details on managing endpoint groups. To deploy a configuration profile for phones within an Endpoint Group:
  1. Navigate to Endpoint > Phone Management > Profiles Deployment.
  2. Select the Endpoint Groups tab.
  3. Select an endpoint group from the list.
  4. Click the    (Edit) button.
  5. In the Edit Endpoint Group dialog, select the Phone Configuration Profile Association tab.
  6. In the Phone Configuration Profile Association tab, select a configuration profile from the Configuration profile Association drop-down list.
  7. Click Add.
  8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 to add more configuration profiles.
  9. Adjust the priority of the configuration profiles by clicking the  (priority) buttons, which will appear as you hover over the configuration profiles added in the list.
  10. Do one of the following:
    • Click Save and Apply to apply the updates to the associated phones now.  This operation may reboot online phones within this group.
    • Click Save to wait for the updates to take effect during the next polling period.

Endpoint Models

All phones are automatically associated with their respective endpoint model deployment strategy.  Associate configuration profiles here when the configuration profile contains common configuration which phones of a particular model requires. To deploy a configuration profile for phones of a specific model:
  1. Navigate to Endpoint > Phone Management > Profiles Deployment.
  2. Select the Endpoint Models tab.
  3. Select an endpoint model from the list.
  4. Click the    (Edit) button.
  5. In the Edit Configuration Profile Association for Device Models dialog, select a configuration profile from the Configuration profile Association drop-down list.
  6. Click Add.
  7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 to add more configuration profiles.
  8. Adjust the priority of the configuration profiles by clicking the  (priority) buttons, which will appear as you hover over the configuration profiles added in the list.
  9. Do one of the following:
    • Click Save and Apply to apply the updates to the associated phones now.  This operation may reboot online phones within this group.
    • Click Save to wait for the updates to take effect during the next polling period.

Sites

All phones are automatically associated with their respective site deployment strategy.  Associate configuration profiles here when the configuration profile contains common configuration which endpoints within a particular site requires. To deploy a configuration profile for phones at a specific site:
  1. Navigate to Endpoint > Phone Management > Profiles Deployment.
  2. Select the Sites tab.
  3. Select a site from the list.
  4. Click the    (Edit) button.
  5. In the Edit Configuration Profile Association for Sites dialog, select a configuration profile from the Configuration profile Association drop-down list.
  6. Click Add.

Endpoints

You can also associate configuration profiles directly to phones.  Associate configuration profiles here when the configuration profile does not contain common configuration which other phones would require. To deploy a configuration profile for a single phone:
  1. Navigate to Endpoint > Phone Management > Profiles Deployment.
  2. Select the Endpoints tab.
  3. Select a phone from the list.
  4. Click the    (Edit) button.
  5. In the Edit Endpoint dialog, select the Configuration Profile Association tab.
  6. In the Configuration Profile Association tab, select a configuration profile from the Configuration profile Association drop-down list.
  7. Click Add.
Caveats:
  • If the same configuration attribute is defined in two separate configuration profiles, and those configuration profiles are associated with different priority deployment strategies, the associated phones will use the configuration attribute which was defined in the highest priority deployment strategy.
  • If the same configuration is defined in two separate configuration profiles, and both configuration profiles are associated with the same deployment strategy, you can use the    (priority) buttons to adjust the position of the configuration profiles within that deployment strategy (in which case the order is highest to lowest in that list).
